Traditions of Indian Cooking

The Indian cooking like all other aspects of Indian life is full of traditions. The food habits of Indian are also based on traditions. Some food items are specially prepared during festivals. The tradition of Indian cooking is very old. The ladies of the house cook food. Mostly, all over India food is cooked after having bath. The traditional houses don’t allow slippers to enter kitchen. In the houses where non-vegetarian food is cooked, it is generally cooked outside the kitchen in a courtyard and the utensils are kept separately.

The food of different regions of India is different from each other. The only common thing that they have is the use of spices. All Indian dishes use spices. The cooking methods are different; many regional flavors are added to the Indian meal cooked in different regions. The different flavors added to Indian cooking makes the dish unique to its own region.

Indian mealtimes are family get together times. Everyone is supposed to have at least one of their meals together. As everyone is working, the dinner is taken together. In the business families where the male members of the family leave house together, generally have heavy brunch like meal together in the morning before leaving to work.

The meals consists of staples like rice and chapattis vegetables, salad, curd, chutney, papad, pickles and is rounded of with a dessert. Most of the Indian are vegetarians, but with changing times many Indians have started taking non-vegetarian food. In many houses onions as well as garlic is avoided completely. The Indian food habit is basically dependent on traditions and beliefs have been prevalent for many ages.

While visiting India one should not be scared of having any food, but select the items that are less spicy and not to rich. There is so much variety in Indian food that you get all types of food and is a pleasurable gastronomic experience.
